With 28 offices across the world’s leading financial and resource centres in Europe, Asia-Pacific, Middle East and the USA, Ashurst offers the scale to attract global mandates. We operate at the cutting edge of the financial, resources and infrastructure, corporate and new economy markets, offering advice that’s as commercially astute as it is technically accurate in diverse areas of law including disputes, competition, M&A and finance. It’s that incisiveness that makes us different from other elite firms: we share our client's ambitions and the depth of our insight allows us to cut to the heart of their issues with speed and clarity.
We take exactly the same approach with our people: we’re interested in understanding each other, finding new and better ways to bring out each individual's talents, and simply enjoying the interaction with other high-calibre, down-to-earth people. It’s a strong, shared culture that will enable you to apply your intellect, develop yourself and thrive as an international lawyer.
A training contract at Ashurst will move your mind beyond technical knowledge of the law. Ultimately, we want to help you become a thought leader with a reputation for clear, perceptive and influential advice – a professional in whom governments and leading businesses the world over can place their trust.
This isn’t an easy route to take. You’ll need to become a shrewd negotiator, have an ability to read both balance sheets and behaviours, and become a commercial strategist with a deep understanding of specific industries.
Our training contract will start you on that road. We will plan closely with you four seats of six months each, that will broaden your world view and hone your talents. At least one seat will be in a finance practice and we will also encourage you to join an overseas office or go on secondment to one of our most valued clients.
Who we’re looking for
We expect a lot of ourselves – and so, as you would expect, you will need to be comfortable with challenges and pressure. You should also be able to express yourself confidently on paper and out loud, whether that’s among your team or in a client’s boardroom.
Alongside all the hard work, we also have fun. We’re incredibly proud of our culture: we thrive when we’re collaborating; we care about our standards of client service; we’re willing to explore ideas and be accountable for their success; and as people, we’re good company. We will expect all of that from you, too.
The best way to learn what it’s really like to work at Ashurst is to meet us at an event or join one of our vacation schemes. Have a look at our website to find out which scheme would be best for you. The below will also give you an insight into what your life could be like as an Ashurst trainee: careers.ashurst.com
Aspiring Solicitors is an organisation committed to increasing diversity in the legal profession. We work with over 26 law firms and legal teams to provide events, mentoring, competitions, employability assistance and access to the legal professions to students from underrepresented groups, and we have helped our members secure over 1,000 vacation schemes and training contracts since 2014.
Some of the opportunities we offer include:
Commercial Awareness Competition
Our unique commercial awareness competition has now been running for four years, and over 1,500 students from 80 universities took part in 2017/18. In 2018/19 students will enter the competition as individuals and will develop their knowledge of the legal profession, client sectors and how economic and political developments impact on both, as they progress through the competition. In 2018/19 the winning team will receive at least five weeks’ work experience with Dechert, TLT, Travers Smith, Mayer Brown and Barclays Legal as well as a bespoke suit, courtesy of LexisNexis.
Members can enter the competition on our website: www.aspiringsolicitors.co.uk
Our new ‘Aspire’ programme launches in September 2018. This programme for up to 300 Aspiring Solicitors members will include bespoke one-to-one careers coaching from our expert legal employability team, as well as the opportunity to attend specific open days with our partner law firms and be mentored by professionals from one of our partner law firms or legal teams.
AS First is a bespoke programme for Aspiring Solicitors members in the first year of a Law degree or first or second year of a non-Law degree. On AS First, students are invited to attend a workshop, have a video interview and feedback, have feedback/coaching sessions with our team and be invited to law firm events. The workshops take place across the country.
Written and delivered by our expert Employability team, the Aspiring Solicitors HeadStart application workshops are unique. They focus on forming a practical strategy for your vacation scheme and training contract success, a targeted applications workshop, a panel consisting of those who have recently obtained a training contract and the opportunity to network with successful AS members who have recently secured training contracts or vacation schemes. The workshops take place across the UK and in 2018, over 500 students attended these sessions.
Legal Work Experience Schemes
We offer a number of different legal work experience programmes, including the Barclays Legal Experience Weeks programme, Shell Work Experience for first years, the Government Legal Service Diversity scheme, an internship with Siemens and more. The programmes involve real legal work experience, and the opportunity to gain an in-depth insight into different firms and legal practices.
Unique within the legal profession, our network of over 350 legal professionals range from global managing partners to associates, trainees and paralegals, to HR and academic professionals, across over 100 different law firms and legal teams. Aspiring Solicitors members can contact any Professional Ambassador to ask questions regarding their career, diversity or firm, amongst other things.

Our roots can be traced back to a shared taxi ride home for two successful lawyers in 1948. In that cab, Russell Baker and John McKenzie discovered they had a shared vision – the desire to create a global law firm of talented, local lawyers.
Fast-forward 70 years and that firm now has offices in almost 80 worldwide locations. Our London office is the largest, with over 400 legal professionals serving our vast portfolio of clients, usually in collaboration with teams in our international offices. And it’s in London that your exciting career, in law, with Baker McKenzie could soon begin.
Here at Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner we work hard at making sure that you are armed with the information and experience you need to succeed in your legal career. From our Career Kick Start program for year 12 students, to becoming a Brand Ambassador, there is vast array of opportunities to gain insight into the firm.

It is essential for the success of our business that we recruit the strongest graduates, who will not only deliver technical excellence, but also exceptional client service.
To achieve this we do not need clones, we need a diverse group of talented individuals who have a consistently strong academic performance, formidable commercial acumen, who are articulate, ambitious, driven and dynamic with sharp minds, enthusiasm and intellectual curiosity.
We recruit 80 trainees each year, across the UK. As we recruit two years in advance we feel it’s important to keep in touch with our future trainees to ensure they feel part of the firm before joining us. Therefore they have access to our online portal, ‘The Pipeline’, where they can contact one another, read blogs from our current trainees, share stories and are kept up to date with news from the firm.
Once they join the firm, trainees complete four six-month seats and are given an opportunity to express what areas of law they would like to experience during their training contracts. There are also opportunities to do a seat abroad, or a client secondment. Current international secondments include Bangkok, Dubai, Hong Kong, Madrid, Moscow and Sydney.
If you want responsibility, and display the right level of aptitude, you will be given as much as you can handle. This refreshing approach to learning and development, combined with an open door policy, provides our trainees with an excellent foundation on which to build their careers.
Our award winning training programme ensures that our people are developed beyond their training contract and throughout their time at DLA Piper, as we believe in investing in the careers and reputation of our people.

Do you want to tackle the most interesting legal work around? And come up with advice that makes sound commercial sense? If you do, we could be the right choice for you.
We’re an international law firm that supports clients wherever in the world they do business. Because we advise some of the world's largest companies on how to grow, strengthen and defend their operations, we can offer you some of the best and most challenging work there is.
You'll help big businesses achieve their goals – from advising them on mergers and acquisitions to sorting out their disputes and commercial challenges. If you’re keen to find solutions that work in the real world – not just ones that reflect what's right or wrong in law – we want to hear from you.
It doesn't matter what your background is, which university you went to or the degree you studied. What does matter is that you have intellectual talent, excellent written and spoken English, and that you work well with other people.
As a trainee, you’re likely to work in a team – usually with an associate and a partner. It’s the team’s job to work out how we can help clients achieve what they want to do. Is it possible? What’s the best way to structure the deal or tackle the problem? What are the risks?
You and your team will need to come up with solutions that answer those questions in a way that makes commercial sense. We’ll show you how.
The work you'll do with us will nearly always be complicated, so to do well you'll need to enjoy being challenged.
Flexibility is key in our training contract. If you train with us, you can try up to eight areas of law. That’s twice as many as most law firms. If you’re not sure yet what field of law is right for you, this could help you find it.
Our lawyers focus on at least one industry sector and work in one of seven practice groups: antitrust, competition and trade; corporate; dispute resolution; employment, pensions and benefits; finance; real estate; and tax.
The corporate, dispute resolution and finance practices are the core of the firm, so we’ll expect you to spend at least three months in each of these groups.
A big firm like ours brings big advantages when it comes to training. As well as continuous development throughout your training contract and beyond, there are regular seminars and team training sessions. You could also spend time on secondment to one of our clients, or to one of our offices in the US, Asia or Europe.
You’ll find a full range of benefits in our central London office – including an on-site gym and private medical and dental care. There’s also the chance to get involved in our thriving pro bono programme, volunteering opportunities and the many sports and social networks that connect people across our firm.
Deals and mergers. Arbitration and advocacy. Litigation and disputes. We’ve got it all. And because we’re one of the world's leading law firms, we also work with some of the biggest international organisations on some of their most ambitious projects.
We’re truly global. We’re market-leaders with 2,900 lawyers in 26 offices across Asia, Australia, Europe, the Middle East and the USA – making us the eighth biggest law firm in the world. Working across borders is a key part of our philosophy. And, thanks to the quality of our international network, we’re able to offer our clients both domestic and cross-border services, meaning you’ll get the opportunity to do truly global work.
Our work is incredibly varied. We provide top quality tailored legal advice to major corporations, governments and financial institutions as well as different types of commercial organisations. Our dispute resolution practice is number one in the UK and Asia and includes both our leading international arbitration practice and award-winning in-house advocacy unit – meaning we can offer a complete litigation service and realistic alternative to the bar. And that’s not all. Our other practice areas include finance, competition, regulation and trade and real estate and employment, plus as specialist areas like intellectual property and tax. Plus we lead the market in corporate. Herbert Smith Freehills prides itself on being a world class law firm that brings together the best people to achieve the best results for clients.
Herbert Smith Freehills is a place where you don’t have to choose between global exposure and supportive teams. Between technical excellence and a client led approach. Between pushing yourself and leading the way. So if you’ve got the drive to make the most of the opportunities on offer, plus the ambition to become a brilliant lawyer, don’t compromise. Be a part of everything at Herbert Smith Freehills.
